North St Louis neighborhoods plan to block eminent domain
Two northside neighborhoods near the new National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency facility have proposed a plan that would guide development there, in hopes of blocking the use of eminent domain against residents.
Neighbors in St. Louis Place and Jeff Vanderlou are asking City Hall to approve a plan that will allow existing residents to use tax abatement for property improvements as well as guarantee that eminent domain will not be used against homes that are being maintained. They fear the city could use that study to again launch eminent domain proceedings against them.
Residents have long been at odds with businessman Paul McKee’s NorthSide Regeneration, which is the largest landowner in North City.
The neighbors’ plan also calls for a “community advisory panel” to give residents a bigger say in future development here.
If the Land Clearance board approves the plan Wednesday, it moves to the Planning Commission for approval and then to the Board of Aldermen.
